About PAFF:
The Pan African Film Festival is the largest film festival in the United States dedicated to the exhibition of Black films. Each year PAFF exhibits more than 150 films made in the U.S., Africa, Europe, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Latin America and Canada. In 2008, 40,000+ people from both the Industry and the public attended PAFF. The17th Annual PAFF will take place February 5-16, 2009 at the AMC Magic Johnson Crenshaw 15 Theatres in Los Angeles.
Eligibility:
The Pan African Film Festival is currently accepting applications for films and videos made by and/or about people of African descent. (Filmmaker needn’t be of African descent.) Films should preferably depict positive and realistic images and can be of any genre ---- drama, comedy, horror, adventure, animation, romance, science fiction, experimental, etc. PAFF accepts features and shorts; narratives and documentaries. We will accept submissions of works in progress; however, films and videos must be completed no later than December 15, 2008.
Competition:
PAFF competition categories are: Best Narrative Feature, The Robeson Narrative Feature Award, Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary Short, Best Documentary Feature, Best Director-First Feature, Festival Programmer’s Award and Audience Favorites. Films in competition must be copyrighted no earlier than 2007. With the exception of Audience Favorite, all films are judged by an independent jury panel.
Submission Procedures:
- A signed and fully completed application with publicity materials must be submitted with a DVD or 1/2” video screener (NTSC or PAL). [Absolutely no mini-DVs or Betas.] To be eligible for programming, the entire application MUST be completed and signed. The submission deadline is Sept. 30, 2008.

May 1 - June 15………………...$20.00
June 16 - July 15………………..$30.00
July 16 – Sept. 30……..………..$40.00 shorts (less than 70 minutes); $60.00 features (70 minutes or more)
Submission fees for submissions made after the Sept. 30 deadline will be $60.00 for shorts; $80.00 for features
- Make checks/money orders payable to: Pan African Film Festival. Money orders only after Sept. 30.
- If you desire confirmation that PAFF has received your entry, please include a self-address stamped postcard.
- If you include a stamped self-addressed envelope with your application, we will do our best to return your screener video or DVD. However, returns are not guaranteed.
- Selected submissions will not be returned.
- PAFF will not be responsible for cassettes or DVD’s lost or damaged in the mail.
- Selection results will be available, beginning November 1, 2008.
- If your film is selected and you are on video format, you will be expected to send PAFF a final presentation version within 3 weeks of your notification.
