What a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year with the bittersweet realities of relationships and love. The centerpiece this year is About Last Night, a rom-com remake of the 80’s version that starred Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. However, Steve Pink’s (Hot Tub Time Machine) vision gravitated more towards the original stage play by David Mamet’s 1974 stage play Sexual Perversity in Chicago, with more raunchy and sexy humor. Of course, the comic relief couple in this version is Kevin Hart and Regina Hall who successfully anted up the laughter.
The many tropes of romantic comedies usually consist of situations or circumstances that complicate people getting together. “About Last Night” is not exception to this common convention. The plot explores how often the only obstacles in finding love are both parties not seeing the right person in front of them. The love interests in the film hold everything up to a microscope and become convinced that their shortcomings are truly detrimental– when in fact those flaws are minor.
Directed by Steve Pink. A very hip re-imagining of the classic sophisticated romantic comedy, this contemporary version closely follows new love for two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world.
Stars Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Joy Bryant, Christopher McDonald and Paula Patton.
About Last Night has had mostly positive reviews.
The film offers
“a modern spin on the challenges of connecting with strange bedfellows; a reboot that is as satisfying as breakfast in bed the morning after an unexpected rendezvous.” She too says that “Hart and Hall are the best part of this film. They play the couple you know all too well: fiery, able to press one another’s buttons and always caught in the makeup to breakup game.”
