Mama of Manyatta
Twenty years ago, Phelgone Jacks was fired from her job as a schoolteacher because of her HIV status. Many children were also barred from schools due to HIV stigma, so Phelgone began teaching them under her own roof. Eventually, she built an Early Childhood Development center and founded a community-based organization combating HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence in the slum of Manyatta. Mama of Manyatta closely follows Phelgone in action, serving as a mother figure to Manyatta’s young and old.
