Charles Burnett won an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2017. He is a renowned independent film director and producer of major award-winning documentaries and feature films. "Killer of Sheep" was declared a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress. Other awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant.
